Health and Obesity: The Opinions of Nurses
Keywords:
Obesity, Body Weight, Nursing, Health. (Source, DeCs, Bireme).Abstract
The objective of this study was to become familiar with nurses’ opinions on obesity published in Brazilian nursing journals. To do so, the authors approached the field of cultural studies, pursuant to the poststructuralist line inspired by Michel Foucault. The body of the research was based on articles found in the nursing journal databases of the Wanda de Aguiar Horta Library (PeriEnf) and the Nursing Database (BDENF). The tools of knowledge, discourse and power proposed by Michel Foucault were used in the analysis, which allowed for the construction of two categories: a lean and healthy body: a game of power and knowledge, and a desirable and health body: traversing a network of opinions. Obesity was understood initially as a condition to be combated through an emphasis on healthy weight loss. Over the years, obesity has come to be regarded as a problem of modernity, bringing with it a model of beauty that favors a slim body.
