Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that impacts the quality of life of adolescents and their families, and its management requires changes and adjustments to their lifestyle. Whittemore and Roy's adaptation theory provides a framework for understanding this process, as it focuses on how individuals respond to health challenges through adaptation, with particular emphasis on education and family support. Nursing plays a key role in applying this perspective to promote self-care and autonomy, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive approach in settings such as schools, clinical care, and households.
