Assistance Needs of Women who Report Incidents of Personal Violence to the Police

Violence has a serious impact on women’s lives and, for that reason, it is understood by the State, the health sector and civil societyas an act that denies human rights and is an important issue in research. Objective: The purpose of this study is to understand the assistanceneeds of women who report incidents of personal violence to the police. Method: It is a qualitative study guided by the theoreticaland methodological framework of the social phenomenology of Alfred Schütz. It was conducted at police stations in a city in southernBrazil through phenomenological interviews with 13 women. Results: Women’s intention in denouncing incidents of violence perpetratedagainst them is an expression of hope with respect to their need for legal aid, institutional assistance and protection for themselves andtheir children. Conclusion: The complaint is related to institutional and social demands, which indicates the importance of viewing thevictims in light of their human and social dimension.Downloads
