Objective: Identify what hospitalization of an extremely preterm newborn means to the father. Materials and methods: This qualitative study, based on an ethnonursing methodology, was conducted in Bogota. Eight parents took part. The data were analyzed according to the Leininger four-phase method for analysis. Results and discussion: Two topics and seven contrasting patterns emerged in light of Leininger's sunrise model. First topic: "Hospitalization of extreme preterm infants: changes in the father's social and cultural structure," with five patterns. Second topic: "Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: first home for extremely preterm infants," with two patterns. Conclusions: The hospitalization of a child is a life-changing event for the father, with the focus being on his child and his partner. This generates changes in the social and cultural structure, so as to strengthen the relationship with the partner, the well-being of the family and to share the situation they are going through.Downloads
