Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the professionalization of nursing in Colombia, based on the sociology of professions, and to reflect on the leading role curricula should assume to strengthen the “whys and wherefores” of the profession. Method: An electronic and manual search of literature was conducted. It included databases, journals, books and doctoral dissertations, and was guided by several descriptors; namely, professions, education, nursing and sociology. Results: Only texts in Spanish and English were reviewed. The information gathered was organized into the following categories: profession, professionalization and professionalization of nursing. Conclusion: The study shows important headway has been made in the process to professionalize nursing. However, it is subject to tensions and conflicts that underscore the need to assume a leading role, beginning with training programs, in order to consolidate and strengthen that process.
