Training for a Bachelor´s Degree in Nursing in Latin America

Background: Latin America currently requires nursing professionals whose profile upon graduation responds to the changes broughtabout by globalization. It is a known fact that training for a bachelor’s degree in nursing is not the same throughout Latin America and is even different within these countries. Objective: The study was designed to describe the training provided for a bachelor’s degree in nursing in Latin America with respect to curriculum, regulations or governing bodies, time, graduation requirements and the profile of those who hold a degree of this type. Materials and Method: A bibliographic review of the websites of Latin American universities that offer a bachelor’s degree in nursing was done. The criteria for inclusion were the following: the university’s ranking within the country (when ranking exists); universities with updated website, and availability of information. Conclusion: The training provided for a bachelor’s degree in nursing in Latin America was found to be heterogeneous. This might be a factor that weakens the discipline and the profession. It is suggested that a consensus be reached on a common curriculum for the region, specifically one that aims for an appropriate professional profile that provides the ability to cope and to satisfy the needs occasioned by the challenges posed in today’s world.
