Abstract

The present study developed a theoretic proposal that described and explained care experience of family carer before, along and after participating in the program Caring Carers, based on the qualitative methodology known as the grounded theory,in order to enrich and strength nursing care from understanding person's reality.

By means of a detailed socialization with research informants, it was possible to validate its conceptualization. A final step allowed confronting the theoretical proposal with referents from scientific literature regarding the topic.

Eleven family carers participated in the study attending the program; the data they provided allowed theoretical saturation of the studied phenomena; in-depth interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to the mentioned approach. Research result is translated into categories identification which was re-grouped in three steps internally related to the process developed by the carer while participating in the program.  This process initiates with an exploration and interaction, continues with an understanding and progress situation and comes to an end when experiencing changes and undertaking new challenges.

The research findings constitute referents to strength nursing being and duty as profession and discipline.
